Understanding SMP Ink Fading: Common Causes and Solutions
10 January 2025
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) treatments can experience some degree of fading over time, which is perfectly normal. However, if you're noticing significant fading, several factors could be contributing to this:
Natural Fading Process All SMP treatments naturally fade by approximately 20% within the first few months after treatment. This initial fading is part of the healing process and should be anticipated by your practitioner, who should account for this by adjusting the initial pigment density accordingly.
Initial Application Depth One of the most common reasons for premature fading is when the ink is not deposited at the correct depth in the skin:
-
Too shallow: The pigment won't properly settle in the skin
-
Too deep: The ink can appear blurry and fade more quickly
Treatment Intensity If your initial treatment was performed too lightly, this could lead to more noticeable fading. Experienced practitioners typically:
-
Build up the density gradually over multiple sessions
-
Account for the natural 20% fading when planning pigment intensity
-
Ensure proper saturation in each treatment area
Immune System Response
In some cases, your body's immune system might be more active in breaking down the pigment particles. This can result in:
-
Faster than normal fading
-
Uneven appearance in certain areas
-
Need for more frequent touch-ups
Other Contributing Factors:
-
Excessive sun exposure
-
Frequent sweating without proper aftercare
-
Use of harsh scalp products
-
Swimming in chlorinated water too soon after treatment
-
Certain medications or health conditions
If you're experiencing significant fading, consult with your SMP artist to determine whether:
-
The initial application was too light
-
Additional sessions are needed
-
Your aftercare routine needs adjustment
-
Touch-up work would be beneficial
Remember, some degree of fading is normal, but excessive fading might indicate the need for adjustments in either the application technique or your maintenance routine.
