Meet Karl Speller: The Creative Force Behind Crown & Follicle's Scalp Micropigmentation
15 March 2024
From personal hair loss journey to becoming a leading SMP Technical Artist, Karl Speller brings a unique artistic perspective to the world of Scalp Micropigmentation at Crown & Follicle in Brighton. In this interview, Karl shares his path into SMP, what sets his studio apart, and valuable insights for those considering the treatment.
Finding His Calling in SMP
Karl's journey into Scalp Micropigmentation began with his own experience with hair loss. "I was going through my own hair loss struggles and was researching procedures when I came across SMP," he recalls. "I saw a few videos and couldn't believe it. I had found something suitable for me."
After receiving the treatment himself, Karl recognised an opportunity to combine his extensive creative background with this innovative solution. "Once I knew more and had the treatment, I realised this was something I could easily do. I have had years of creative background in design and art, and it translated over into SMP."
He noticed a gap in the industry: "Not a lot of SMP practitioners came from artistic backgrounds, and that was disappointing. I feel there is a lot more to gain from the experience of someone working in the creative field." This observation, coupled with his desire to share his personal experience with others, led him to establish Crown & Follicle.
The Crown & Follicle Difference
What sets Crown & Follicle apart is its unique approach to client care and service delivery. "We provide a personal and discreet service at our home-based studio," Karl explains. "A lot of customers prefer the home office over a high-street office as it's more personal and relaxing for them."
Located in Brighton, the studio offers convenient parking and a peaceful environment away from the city's bustle. But perhaps the most distinctive aspect is Karl's artistic approach to SMP: "I have spent over two decades as a graphic designer, illustrator and children's book illustrator. I know a thing or two about tone and colour variation, and that experience has helped me massively."
The Rewards of Transformation
For Karl, the most rewarding aspect of his work is witnessing the transformation in his clients' confidence. "The best part of the job is watching people's confidence change over a couple of sessions. It is remarkable what a difference it can make," he says proudly. "I've seen people come wearing hats and leaving with them in their pocket, which is a nice feeling. I wish I could bottle that energy up, it is such a lovely feeling."
Advice for Prospective Clients
When asked what advice he'd give to those considering SMP, Karl emphasises the importance of thorough research: "Research, research, research!!! That is the first and foremost. Find the RIGHT SMP technician suitable to you. Someone that has a good portfolio and someone you can trust. They need to take it seriously. Feel free to ask them plenty of questions."
He also stresses the importance of understanding the commitment involved: "Remember, SMP isn't for everyone. If you are a little bit lazy and won't take to a grooming regime, it probably isn't for you. It is important to help maintain the look, and that requires your input too."
Karl concludes with an encouraging perspective on the shaved head look: "If you are happy to keep your hair shaved, it is right for you. A shaved head is like a suit! It never goes out of fashion and always looks smart!"
