Is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) Painful?
19 January 2025
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) naturally raises questions about pain and discomfort. Let's explore what you can expect during and after the Crown & Follicle treatment.
During the Procedure
Most clients report minimal to moderate discomfort during SMP. The sensation is often described as a light scratching or mild irritation rather than sharp pain. This is because SMP needles only penetrate the superficial layer of the skin, unlike traditional tattoos which go much deeper.
Pain Management
- If the area is proving painful, we can apply topical numbing cream
- The scalp is one of the less sensitive areas of the body for micropigmentation
- Multiple sessions are spaced out to allow healing and minimise discomfort
- The first session is usually the most sensitive, with subsequent sessions being more tolerable
Pain Scale
On a scale of 1-10, most clients rate SMP pain between 2-4. However, pain tolerance varies significantly between individuals. Areas like the crown and sides typically cause less discomfort than the hairline or temples.
After the Procedure
- Mild tenderness for 24-48 hours is normal
- Light redness and sensitivity typically subside within 3-4 days
- No significant pain should be experienced during healing
- Over-the-counter pain medication can help if needed
Real Client Experiences
Most clients report that the anticipation of pain is actually worse than the procedure itself. Many are surprised by how manageable the discomfort is and find the results well worth the temporary sensation.
Bottom line
While SMP isn't painless, it's generally well-tolerated and manageable for most people. The temporary discomfort is outweighed by the long-lasting results and confidence boost many clients experience.
