Scalp Micropigmentation

Frequently Asked Questions

At Crown & Follicle, our FAQ section addresses the most common questions about our scalp micropigmentation services, procedures, and aftercare. If you can't find the answer you're looking for, please contact our team by phone, or email - we're here to help with any specific questions about your SMP journey.

Your SMP journey is completed over a minimum of three sessions (only charged for three sessions):

  • Session 1 establishes your initial foundation
  • Session 2 follows one week later to build density
  • Session 3 takes place after a two to three-week interval to perfect your look

Each session ranges from 1-4 hours, customised to your specific coverage requirements.

We build your perfect look over 3 carefully planned sessions. Beginning with a lighter shade, we gradually adjust the colour and density to achieve a flawless blend with your existing hair. This methodical approach ensures natural-looking results that are exactly right for you.

Your transformation begins immediately, with visible results and your new hairline apparent from day one. While some temporary redness may occur for about 24 hours after each session, this is completely normal. Over a minimum of three carefully planned sessions (only charged for three), we perfect your look by gradually building density and fine-tuning both colour and hairline shape until we achieve your ideal result.

Scalp Micropigmentation is a highly specialised field requiring specific training, equipment, and techniques distinct from traditional tattooing. The procedures are so different that expertise in one does not translate to the other. Our dedicated SMP equipment, pigments, and methods are designed exclusively for creating realistic hair follicle replications.

SMP typically causes mild discomfort, rated 3-4 out of 10, with most clients experiencing a slight scratching or vibrating sensation that's less intense than traditional tattoos. The crown and hairline areas tend to be more sensitive, but numbing cream and regular breaks help manage any discomfort, which usually subsides quickly after treatment with minimal recovery time needed.

Touch-up is where you may want to adjust your hairline, give it a freshen up or to go a touch darker. A touch-up costs around £300 (depending on the size of treatment area) and can take anywhere from one hour or longer.

Whether you need to shave for SMP depends on your desired outcome - shaving is necessary for a buzz-cut look but not required if you're using SMP to add density to thinning hair or longer hairstyles. A consultation with Karl can help determine the best approach for your specific goals.

Absolutely not! We can tailor the treatment to suit any hair colour, including grey.

SMP pigments naturally fade over time without changing colour, typically requiring touch-ups every 4-6 years to maintain freshness. The longevity depends on factors like sun exposure and skincare routine, while proper maintenance including sun protection can help preserve the results. The treatment can be updated during touch-ups to match any changes in your natural hair or aging appearance.

If you’ve undergone hair transplant surgery, you may have scars left behind. We can effectively camouflage all types of hair transplant scarring—whether from Strip, Punch, or FUE methods—allowing you to wear your hair as short as you like with confidence.

In addition to concealing scars, we can enhance your transplant results by adding density to thin or thinning hair, creating a fuller and more natural appearance.

Yes, Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is reversible, but the process requires specialised laser treatments.

SMP is a safe, non-invasive procedure that uses hypoallergenic pigments in the upper skin layers, with minimal side effects like temporary redness and virtually no recovery time needed.

You typically don’t need to take time off for Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), as it’s a non-invasive procedure with minimal downtime.
